Recognized as one of the foremost figures in documentary film-making, Wang Bing has developed a singular film aesthetic, where a political attitude cohabits with a profound emotional texture, and where image-based narratives are able to counter the mainstream discourses on present-day China. In the past years he intensively worked in two parallel locations, to investigate the relation between China and West Africa, as one of the most intense channels of economic relation in contemporary globalization. On the one side he filmed the portrait of a young guy named Kinsley, and through his eyes, his life as part of the West African communities of workers currently settled in the industrial district of Guangzhou. On the other side the city of Lagos, its urban landscape and infrastructures, in which Wang Bing traces China’s presence, and its peculiar forms of economic colonization of West Africa. Premiering at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Scenes is the culmination of this impressive project: a performative installation, merging films and live elements, and where the two geopolitical situations are reunited as the two sides of the same coin. Wang Bing creates a sharp fresco, reconnecting with sensibility the symmetries and asymmetries of this relation, and where globalization, more than a matter of connection, ultimately appears as an interconnection of visible presences and invisible powers.

Confronted with the SARS-CoV-2 crisis, we had to cancel this project
