The one true journey, the only way
of being revitalised, would be not to make for new landscapes,
but to have other eyes, to see the world with the eyes of another,
of one hundred others, to see the one hundred worlds that each
of them sees, that each of them is.
Marcel Proust
If there’s a dream on which
the creation of a festival called the KunstenFESTIVALdesArts is
founded, then this is it… |

This is the seventh time that the
month of May will be sporting the colours of the KunstenFESTIVALdesArts
in Brussels. It is said that seven is a highly symbolic number:
for some it denotes totality, eternal life, and a complete and
perfectly made human being; for others the number has more modest
connotations of a ‘cycle’, ‘passage’ or ‘union
of opposites’. These describe more accurately the image of
a festival that brings ‘differences’ and ‘contradictions’ together,
now returning every year to transport different cultures to our
door.

From 4 to 26 of May, the KunstenFESTIVALdesArts
descends again on Brussels. This sixth edition presents 29 projects:
A subtle balance between 14 existing works, amongst our favorites,
and 15 newly created projects, full of promise. Don't look for
just one theme, territory, language, aesthetic quality or single
discipline - the KunstenFESTIVALdesArts is a hybrid, like this
century. More than by reason or a strategy of some kind, we made
selections following our intuition. Similarly, you should follow
your own…

From the May 5th to 27th 2000, 19
theatres , cinemas and exhibition halls of the capital will be
alive with the rhythm of the 5th KunstenFESTIVALdesArts. Brussels
will be the first city in which twenty of the thirty events, created
by Belgian and foreign artists, will be performed. The program
moves from theatre to dance, from cinema to musical theatre, from
readings to installations and delights in marrying together the
different disciplines. Follow the footsteps of these contemporary
artists, they are poets of our realities. Like Lewis Carroll's
Alice, they will bring you to the other side of the mirror.

A common theme links the spiral
of the inner ear, the centuries-old “goose game” (similar
to snakes and ladders) and the kunstenFESTIVALdesArts. A theme
that unites sensibility, sense, and the nonsense of one-way traffic.
The goose game is a boardgame in the shape of a spiral. Players start at
the outer end and work their way towards the middle. Some squares are blank,
which means you can continue towards your goal, others are obstacles best
avoided. We have chosen the game to introduce the fourth Festival – and
we have adapted it, making Brussels the centre square and endpoint.
